Thom Cullen
Thom Cullen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Studies where he teaches English as a second language and trains teachers to do the same.
In the Winter 1998, 1999 and 2000 semesters, Thom incorporated academic service-learning into a business communication course for graduate students in the Language and International Trade Program. Students from around the world were placed in community organizations to assist in the business operations of those organizations. About a dozen of Thom's students assisted the Huron Valley Girl Scouts in their annual cookie sale. International Business language students played an active role in helping to coordinate sales, distribute product, collect revenues, and reward outstanding sales representatives. According to Thom, "The academic service-learning experience is helpful in introducing students from around the world to the community service ethic that permeates American culture."

Sandra McClennen
Sandra McClennen is Professor Emeritus of Special Education with specialties in mental retardation and autism.
When Sandi was teaching at EMU, she used academic service-learning in her course, Introduction to Mental Retardation, by working with both local agencies and school districts to match her students with adults with developmental disabilities so that each pair could engage in recreational activities weekly throughout the semester. In this way, her students learned more about the varieties of adult life for which they will prepare their students with mental retardation and how school programs contribute to narrowing or broadening adult choices for their students. The adults with whom they were paired enjoyed recreational experiences with a fellow adult who does not have a disability, an opportunity that many do not have. Now that Sandi has more personal time, she enjoys sharing recreation with and providing advocacy and support to three adults with autism.
