Howard Bunsis
Howard Bunsis uses academic service-learning activities in the ACC 696 capstone course. He has taught the class for the past three winters, and plans on teaching it for the foreseeable future. So far, he has had students help more than 20 organizations. These organizations have ranged from small for-profit businesses to large not-for-profit enterprises. Here are some examples of the type of work our students have done:

  • Set up basic accounting systems.
  • Determine which products and areas of a business are profitable.
  • Help charter schools with their special education budgets.
  • Assist organizations in their investment strategies.
  • Coordinate the accounting and financial issues for several non-profits that work under an umbrella organization.
  • Create accounting policies and procedures manuals for organizations in dealing with cash and receivable issues.

In addition to teaching the capstone course, Professor Bunsis teaches intermediate accounting, has started a new accounting and e-commerce class, and has taught accounting in the Masco MBA program for the last several years. Some of these courses have been offered either 100% online, or partially online. His course web sites can be found at http://hbunsis.pageout.net

Dennis Grady
Dennis Grady is an associate professor in the Communication and Theatre Arts Department. In his CTAC 226 Nonverbal Communication course, academic service-learning provided students with a way to observe and analyze naturally occurring nonverbal cues.

Students worked on a variety of projects, ranging from tutoring middle school children to working in a homeless shelter. Dr. Grady also incorporated academic service-learning into his CTAC 379 Queer Communication class. Students again worked on a variety of projects, including facilitating a meeting of a high school gay-straight alliance and assisting the Detroit Triangle Foundation in monitoring Internet sources for queer-related content.
