Peggy Alford
Peggy Alford-Trewn is an Assistant Professor in Nursing at Eastern Michigan University. Her specialty is Community Health Nursing. Dr. Alford initially piloted academic service-learning concepts in a clinical section of NUR 451 during the Fall semester of 2001. Nursing students assigned to an elementary school in Detroit collaborated with the school prinicipal, teachers and staff to determine how to best address health promotion in the school setting. Beginning Fall, 2002 academic service-learning will be integrated into NUR 450.

Russel Olwell
Russell Olwell is Assistant Professor of History and Philosophy at EMU, where he joined the faculty in 1999. His specialties include the history of science and technology, twentieth century US history, labor history, and teaching methods of history and social studies.

Dr. Olwell is integrating service learning into his History 481 (Methods of teaching history and social studies) and His 123 (US history, 1492-1877) classes. In His 481, student will work with local schools to develop a richer social studies curriculum. His 123 students will design historical activities for local preschool students, as well as help local 5th grade students learn research school in a joint project with the Halle Library staff.

Kelly Welker
Kelly Welker is an Assistant Professor at EMU. She is the program coordinator and graduate advisor for the Apparel, Textiles, and Merchandising (ATM) program. She also serves as the advisor for Fashion Forum. Her research interests include patronage behavior and small businesses. Kelly teaches display techniques, visual merchandising, professional seminar, application of merchandising principles, and merchandise planning and control.

Kelly plans to use academic service-learning in her ATM 437 Professional Seminar course, and the proposed agency she will be working with is Dress for Success.

Elizabeth Schuster
Elizabeth Oates Schuster is a Professor of Gerontology and is the director of the Gerontology Program at Eastern Michigan University.

During her career, Dr. Schuster has been involved in senior center program development, facilitation of educational workshops various topics such as health, and aging and memory, development of an adult day care center, conducting needs assessment survey research, and coordination of a social service program for older adults and their families.

Schuster plans to incorporate academic service-learning into SWRK 420: Working with Aging People, in the Fall semester of 2001. She will be working with the following agencies: Turner Geriatric Center Silver Club, the EMU Respite Care Project, and HelpSource.

Marcia Bombyk
Dr. Marcia (Marti) Bombyk joined the Department of Social Work at Eastern Michigan University in 1996. She teaches courses related to social policy, social work history, women’s issues, families and children, research methods, and practice with groups, organizations and communities.

She used academic service-learning in a course, "Women and the Community," while she was a graduate student at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Bombyk plans to introduce service-learning into the course SWRK 403, Practice Issues with Women, in the Fall 2001 semester. She will place students with community organizations that focus on women's issues or that serve girls and women with practices that are sensitive to gender issues.
