Rhonda Kinney
Rhonda Kinney serves as interim department head for political science and is affiliated with the Women’s Studies Program. Her current research interests focus on public policy innovation and executive leadership at the state and national levels.
Kinney incorporated service-learning in both her political science and women’s studies teaching. Political science students were asked to work with community, and government agencies in order to evaluate their effectiveness and accessibility to average citizens. As one choice for their capstone project in women’s studies students were required to work with a local agency devoted to gender related issues. Assignments included administrative support for a Friend of the Court Office; project coordination for domestic violence shelters, groups and organizations; awareness programming for family planning agencies, AIDS activism groups, and domestic violence organizations. In these roles, students were asked to assess and apply knowledge and skills gained in the program’s courses.

John A. Novak
John A. Novak has used academic service-learning activities in BIOL 403 Materials and Methods for Teaching Biology.
The approach taken was to provide a service and/or develop a product that met course goals and was of benefit to a given organization. Thus far, students worked on projects/activities for various organizations including, among others,: Michigan Humane Society (developed interactive "Pets and People" project for elementary students and teachers), Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation (developed brochure for Cedar Bend Nature Area), University of Michigan North Campus (developed activity on how to identify trees), Leslie Science Center- Ann Arbor (taught science lessons for elementary and middle school students), Trenton (MI) Parks and recreation (developed brochure on city parks and what they have to offer), City of Chelsea- MI (developed instructions for composting), Friends of the Rouge River (prepared water quality testing activity), Food Gatherers (prepared poster on food poisoning and consumer safety). Other projects were developed to be used by more than one organization; for example, a brochure on "What Happens to Materials you Recycle" was developed for use by any community.
Novak has conducted workshops on how to incorporate academic service-learning approaches into elementary and secondary school teaching. Dr. Novak is currently working as the EMU community college relations liaison. In addition to developing articulation agreements he works with community colleges who are interested in academic service-learning at their institutions.
