Lori Burlingame
Lori Burlingame is an Assistant Professor in the English Department. Her research area is Native American literature, and she teaches Native American literature, twentieth century American literature, and composition.

Burlingame incorporated academic service-learning in her Honors Native American literature course in the winter term of 2000. Her students completed an interdisciplinary academic service-learning project that brought together Native American literature and English education students at Eastern for the purposes of increasing the literature students' knowledge about Native American literature and related issues and providing bibliographies and guides for education majors seeking to diversify their teaching.

The student's projects involved group meetings, individual research and reading about juvenile literatures (these were not part of the course's regular reading content), the preparation of age and culture appropriate bibliographies for and guides to teaching Native texts in the elementary and secondary classroom, and the written and oral presentation of these materials to the education students in Rebecca Sipe's class.

Rebecca Bowers Sipe
Rebecca Bowers Sipe is an Assistant Professor in the English Department where she teaches pedagogy and written communication courses and serves as Co-Director of the Eastern Michigan Writing Project.

Rebecca has been exploring ways to involve her pre-practicum students in the process of teaching writing to secondary students, through one-on-one interaction and coaching of adolescent writers using E-mail. Case studies emerging from this work have included in-depth literacy histories and observations from interactions. Since the fall of 1999 she has involved her students in projects that closely link them to high schools engaged in school reform effort that use writing to learn across the curriculum.

During 1998-2000 Dr. Sipe maintained an on-going academic service-learning project between her methods students and writing students at Chelsea High School. Described as a mutually collaborative project, EMU students coached writing via technological connections by exchanging regular correspondence and pieces of academic writing. In addition, EMU students provided service to the Chelsea faculty by conducting the school-wide writing assessment each fall and winter, analyzing results of the assessment, and providing detailed data reports to the faculty for in-house decision making regarding curriculum and professional development.

Rebecca also recently published an article reporting her findings from her projects in the English Journal, Volume 90, Number 5, pg. 33-38. The title of the article was "Academic Service-Learning: More than just doing time," published May 2001.
